Although the similarities between US and UK English are obvious, spelling, grammar and colloquialisms do vary. In order to resonate successfully with your desired audience, texts must be localised in accordance with your target market.
English is the majority native language in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. It is also an official language and the main language of Singapore, and it is widely spoken in some areas of the Caribbean, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania.
Traditionally, medical and scientific texts were generally written in Latin. However, in modern times, English is universally considered the language of the sciences. Approximately 80% of research papers are published in English, as are the top 50 most prestigious scientific journals.
According to the ranking of the Global Financial Centres Index, the top ten financial centres worldwide are London, New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Zurich, Washington DC, San Francisco, Boston and Toronto. Eight of those ten places have English as a primary or official language. One of the two exceptions is Zurich, where the primary language is Swiss German – but as 61% of the population of Switzerland also speak English, and a tenth of the population there speak English at work. The other is Tokyo, where only a tiny percentage of the population is non-Japanese.
