With around 144 million native speakers, Russian is 7th most widely-spoken language globally, the largest native language in the world and one of the 6 official languages of the United Nations. Russian has official language status in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan but it can also be heard in parts of Ukraine, Moldova, Latvia and Estonia. This is a good reason why companies should use professional Russian translators to communicate with their target audience.
A bit about the language
Part of the Indo-European family, Russian is an East Slavic language that has endured many linguistic changes and influences throughout its lifetime. Under the ruling of Peter the Great came a reformed alphabet and a goal to modernise and break away from a previously religiously-led tongue. The language adopted vocabulary from Western Europe and the Greek words that derived from the Church Slavonic were changed from the Byzantine pronunciation to post-Renaissance European. After the political breakdown in 1990-1991, economic uncertainties saw yet another change in the language, this time with English playing a part in a new wave of additions to the vocabulary. Today, the Russian language is still evolving with new words appearing and new styles of expression emerging on a continuous basis.
Russia is the 15th largest economy in the world, and the 6th largest purchasing power. Natural resources play a key part in the Russian economy, particularly in the field of oil, natural gases and mining. Other strong sectors include automotive, aerospace, weapons and military manufacturing and aircraft building.
