Making a leading translation agency team even better!
Climbing a mountain has many meanings, many relating to challenges we face in everyday life, whether you work for a translation agency like ALM or in a hospital, we all feel at times we are facing challenges.
With several new team members, this year was the perfect time to organise a teambuilding event. We discussed a few options and came up with the Snowdon Challenge. Team building company Eventus then helped us to put the event together. With an office spread over three floors, we are slightly fragmented as a team. We wanted to bring everyone together in a fun but challenging, non-working environment.
We were also inspired by Edmund Hillary’s 10 Steps to the Summit of the World, which is particularly apt in today’s business world
1) Nothing ventured, nothing gained
2) Challenge, uncertainty, excitement
3) Fear makes you focus
4) Passion gives you confidence
5) Fun makes for a great team
6) Make sure you have more than one thing to live for
7) Resist the flock factor
8) You are all you have
9) Great challenges result in powerful experiences
10) A view from the summit – to new horizons
With this in mind, the challenge to conquer Snowdon was on!
Phil and Jock, our mountain guides gave us challenges along the way, from finding a shelter, putting a Bothy bag up in record time, tying various knots and finding photo opportunities along the way, which included reinventing famous album covers using aspects of the mountain landscape. There were also quizzes on mountain survival and mountain-related facts. One thing’s for sure, we’d all know how to survive an avalanche and stay safe in a mountain storm having completed this challenge. Next stop could be Everest – we like to aim high!
This was an excellent team challenge and a lot tougher than many of the team thought it would be, but if this was too easy, it wouldn’t have pushed anyone to conquer not only the mountain, but also their fears – two of our team have a serious fear of heights and a couple of our project managers had never done anything like this before.
The team we employ at ALM Translations face many challenges every day and pull together to ensure projects are handled, planned, reviewed and delivered all within a specific deadline. Behind the scenes, our team of Project Managers, Editors and Reviewers, Accounts personnel, Business Development staff and our all-important Technical Solutions team ensure that our clients receive the best translation for the best price, in the best time. The Directors are proud of the ALM team on a daily basis, but the Snowdon Challenge really demonstrated what a wonderful translation agency team ALM Translations employs. We all made it to the top through team work and utter hard work and determination!
